The Power of Purpose
A Powerful Force to Overcome Depression & Dramatically Improve Motivation
How happy and fulfilled we feel comes down to what we focus on. Do we dwell on everything that is going wrong, or have we trained our minds to focus on our wins and the positives in life? One lends itself to stressful, unhappy living, the other keeps us moving in a positive direction.
Having a positive focus in life is critical, not only to live in a happier and more successful way, but also to keep our minds from getting unnecessarily preoccupied with negative and unproductive thinking.
Negative thinking is a natural and even helpful attribute of our minds if we keep it in check and use it properly. Negative thoughts can help us see the weaknesses in a plan, identify things we may not enjoy, and provide a more realistic assessment of our options.
Taken to excess, however, negative thinking can begin to permeate our lives and be self-destructive, making us feel unhappy, uninspired, or depressed and can even adversely undermine our confidence in a variety of debilitating ways.
Having a positive focus or purpose in our lives however, can be a powerful antidote to ensure we keep our negative thinking balanced instead of running amuck in our minds and making us feel bad about the way our lives are going.
A positive focus can include things like having a desire or goal that you’re passionate about, having an underlying desire to be helpful to others, a hobby you really enjoy, seeing yourself or your kids succeed at something that’s important, or a long-term mission you want to accomplish in your life like making a certain amount of money, achieving something specific, or building or creating something, etc. The possibilities are endless.
It also includes finding the positives in our circumstances, the proverbial silver-lining in our experiences. If we at least learn something when things go wrong, at least we are extracting value and something positive from the situation. Again, it all comes down to what we focus on.
The main point is about having a positive focus in our lives, in other words, living with purpose. If we are able to identify an important positive focus or purpose for ourselves, something that we always have in our minds that we’re excited about, it can help us avoid excessive negativity, prolonged periods of unhappiness, low confidence, and unpleasant emotional states like depression, frustration, and despair. Purpose gives us something to live for. It’s what gets us off the couch or out of bed early and gives us an incredible well of energy to draw from that is life enhancing.
